Educational programs designed to educate participants on the causes, consequences and means of prevention of sexual assault are conducted by several campus units, including the Emily Taylor Women's Resource Center, Watkins Student Health Center, Department of Student Housing and Douglas County Rape Victim Survivor Services. These programs are held in organized living groups and other on-campus locations. If a member of the campus community is a victim of a sexual assault or other sex offense, that person is encouraged to contact the police. Counseling and other personal assistance services will be coordinated in accordance with the wishes of the victim. If the victim initially reports the incident to other University personnel, the victim will be advised of the opportunity and will be encouraged to file a police report. Assistance in initiating police contact will be provided. It is the right of the victim to determine whether or not to report an offense to the police or other authority. When an incident is reported and upon request of the victim, every possible effort will be made to assist in the identification of alternative living situations and class sections. Preservation of any physical evidence is important to assist in the process of identifying and determining responsibility of a perpetrator of a sexual offense. A victim should not change clothes, should not shower or bathe, should not remove sheets from the bed or do anything else which may eliminate physical evidence. The University of Kansas believes that sexual assault, as a criminal offense, should be treated as such and be handled through the criminal courts. Campus disciplinary procedures exist to deal with student conduct cases, with sanctions ranging from warning to expulsion. (Refer to the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities.) If campus disciplinary procedures are utilized, each party involved has the same right to have a person of his or her choice present, and each party will be informed of the findings and results.
